It’s almost been two years... but when I’m with a family in New Jersey time freezes, and every moment is filled with so much spiritual enlightenment... Time freezes when...©2019 Undine Groeger

It was in 2017 when I  met Donna in the streets of New York City in 2017. She is third generation Japanese - American and her family’s survivor story was one of over 20 stories that became part of my long-form multimedia documentary project « Walls, Within and With(out) ». Seven stories including her family story were exhibited for the first time at the International Center of Photography's group exhibition at the Rita K. Hillman Gallery in summer 2018. « Walls, Within and With(out)» is the continuation of « Within My Walls and Beyond » travelling exhibition that addresses walls that persist in our communities today. It has been shown in Switzerland since 2014 and received support from the German Mission to the United Nation, the Caux-Initiatives of Change Foundation, the International School of Geneva, and various entrepreneurial organizations.

Donna's family came to the exhibit to experience the project’s installation that included parts of her father’s and grandmother’s survivor story in the Japanese-American internment camps in the United States and how this experience had impacted three generations in her family.

In his last days her father shared with me that his first choice (that would not be granted to him) was to be deployed to Germany when serving in the U.S. Army. « Eventually Germany came to you », I replied, and he laughed. Shortly after, I returned to Germany for a few weeks and sad news reached me about his passing.

Part of the multimedia project "Walls, Within and With(Out)"©2019 Undine Groeger

I‘ve been invited ever since to their family home in New Jersey. His survivor spirit lives on through his photographs, his children and his beautiful wife, who is also a camp survivor. I continue capturing their memories of hardship, but also incredible resilience, leadership, creativity, passion and love that has always been present and continues to be at the center of their family life.

I feel honoured to have been able to contribute to the elimination and awareness raising efforts regarding Hepatitis C.

"The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major threat to public health around the world. Easily transmitted, its symptoms often do not manifest for decades after the initial infection. The implications for people’s health are serious: 85% of those infected develop chronic HCV, and many of these patients subsequently develop cirrhosis or liver cancer. About 700,000 individuals die each year from liver conditions caused by HCV, making the disease a signi cant global killer and one with a hefty price tag.(1)

To surface actionable ideas about how to close the gap between today’s scientific and policy advances and their large-scale application to help eliminate HCV as a global public health threat, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), with the sponsorship of AbbVie, convened a roundtable on Bridging the Know-do Gap in September 2016 in Geneva."

The Story of Within My Walls and Beyond

Within My Walls and Beyond, represents a personal journey towards understanding Germany’s past. It includes 3 generations that experienced the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, and, in parallel, opens a window onto life in a place that can be reminiscent of former East Germany, Transnistria, a post-Soviet frozen conflict zone between Moldova and Ukraine.

Within My Walls and Beyond was first exhibited in November, 2014 to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was initially made possible through the generous support of the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva, private sponsors, and collaborators. The travelling photo exhibition is part of a larger project, Within Our Walls and Beyond, that was co-created by Undine Groeger and Kieran Gopaul to reconcile the past in the present through the power of photography. It includes the travelling photo exhibition, Within My Walls and Beyond, a growing archive of testimonials on the fall of the Berlin Wall, workshops, and other documentary photography projects on walls that persist in our local and global communities.

"To encourage children in our Western society to critically reflect on the role of women in art and culture, as well as the gaps and barriers that surround us to this day, we invite students to visit Undine Groeger’s photo exhibition, Within My Walls and Beyond, which provides a concrete outlook on these issues while inviting visitors to reflect on the walls they face personally and within themselves.

In a time when borders are being broken and rebuilt, understanding the goals and consequences of the fall of the Berlin Wall on our society allows us to critically reflect on the future we are creating for our children, not only in terms of sustainable development or economics but also openness and social harmony.

Walls today are not only made of concrete or solid materials, but can also be felt in our words, our prejudices, our cultures, or even our personal experiences. How do we tame and overcome these walls?

Within the International School of Geneva, the Arts Centre serves an educational and public purpose and is resolutely turned towards a holistic approach to education in order to develop emotionally intelligent, creative, and confident adults. That is why we are thrilled to welcome this travelling photo exhibition, Within My Walls and Beyond, from November 14th to 20th in this cultural building that is dedicated to art and education, and in honour of Geneva’s Festival les Créatives."

(Translation by Kieran Gopaul)

In March 2016 Wahre Geschichten Zürich invited me to share my story on the theme of Awakening on April 17, 2016.

I chose to write and perform a spoken word on my Awakening on November 10th, 1989 in then East Berlin, and 18 years later in Transnistria. It is about how I became a stranger after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and my journey of reconciliation with the past and back to my identity.

"What does it mean to discover a wall after it fell? Where or what is Transnistria? Where is home? Interested in hearing my story?" Listen to the Podcast here

Today, reconciling the past in the presence through photography is at the core of my work as a photographer and the mission of my entrepreneurial photography project, Within Our Walls and Beyond,  that aims to change narratives, encourage dialogue, build bridges, heal and make peace both on the individual and on the collective level.

It was with great pleasure that Brummel and I accepted the invitation from the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the Socialist Unity Party Dictatorship (under communist rule in East Germany from 1949 to 1989) to present at the 8th History Fair in Suhl, Germany, from the 29th to the 31st of January 2015.

The theme of the 8th History Fair was “25 years of German reunification”

The travelling photo-exhibit Within My Walls and Beyond and the community project Within Our Walls and Beyond was presented at a stand and with a presentation to the public.

It was an unforgettable part of my journey towards understanding my history, that of my parents' and my grandparents' - to learn, discover, discuss and contribute to a dialogue on reappraisal and reconciliation.

Special thanks goes to the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, and to those who shared their stories and witnessed.

November 30, 3-7 pm, for the last time at Pavillon Bleu aux Grottes (Rue des Amis) behind the Cornavin train station in Geneva opens its doors for the last time to Within My Walls and Beyond, a solo exhibition by documentary photographer Undine Groeger.

With photographs, a film and other installations, Within My Walls and Beyond pays tribute to the lives of East Berliners before and after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, and the people of Transnistria who still live in a post-Soviet frozen conflict zone between Moldova and Ukraine.

It is a testimony of 3 generations showing their perspectives on the Berlin Wall from the point of view of a child, a parent, a grandmother and a teddy bear, Brummel.

"The world is on the brink of a new Cold War. Some are even saying that it’s already begun,” Gorbachev said at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, close to the city’s iconic Brandenburg Gate. Gorbachev called for trust to be restored through dialogue."

"Paying tribute to the East Berliners who pushed past border guards to flood through the Wall on Nov. 9, 1989 and commemorated the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall," Obama said in a statement Friday that “as Russia’s actions against Ukraine remind us, we have more work to do to fully realize our shared vision of a Europe that is whole, free and at peace.”
